Scholarships Available to Help Re-Entry Students Finish Their Degrees

Published: Fri, 03/20/2020 - 16:35
LAS VEGAS – Non-traditional students are becoming new traditional students at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. These are students who had their education journey disrupted by family commitments, military service, finances, or other reasons. Not surprisingly, money is often a barrier for adult learners wishing to complete their degree. UNLV’s Community2Campus office within the Division of Educational Outreach administers several scholarships earmarked especially for students returning to college after an extended interruption. The Bernard Osher Foundation Re-entry Scholarship awards up to $2,500 per year for full time students pursuing their first bachelor’s degree who have experienced a break of five or more years in their education. The UNLV Foundation Board of Trustees Re-entry Scholarship represents a commitment by the UNLV Foundation to get students back on track for graduation and offers $2,000 scholarships for the fall or spring semester. Eligible applicants should be pursuing their first bachelor’s degree and have experienced an interruption of five or more years in their education. The Re-entry Friendship Scholarship was established over 20 years ago by four Las Vegas women in honor of their friendship; it is still funded by donors who give in honor, memory, and celebration of special friends. Awards up to $1,000 are given for fall or spring semester to undergraduate or graduate students with a minimum three year interruption in their schooling. The scholarship application deadline for the 2013-2014 academic year is 5 p.m. Friday, April 12. Awards for both fall and spring semesters will be selected from this pool of applicants. Scholarship applications are available online at http://edoutreach.unlv.edu/community2campus. Applicants must submit the form as well as a separate personal statement for each scholarship for which they wish to be considered. Applicants for all scholarships must be formally admitted to UNLV as a degree-seeking student to be considered for an award. Awards are paid out two times per year based on meeting the award criteria. Community2Campus supports non-traditional students as they make the transition back to college to complete their degrees. Staff is available to connect students with campus resources including academic advising, credit transfers, tutoring, student groups, and financial aid. To learn more about Community2Campus or re-entry scholarships, call Liz Baldizan at 702-774-4626 or email Elizabeth.Baldizan@unlv.edu. The Community2Campus office is now located on the main UNLV campus in the James E. Rogers Center for Administration and Justice (RAJ), Room 277A.

New Continuing Education Computer Labs Debut at UNLV Paradise Campus

Published: Thu, 03/19/2020 - 17:35

The Division of Educational Outreach is pleased to announce the opening of two new computer teaching labs at our UNLV Paradise Campus. While a handful of courses tested the PC lab in August, the sleek, silvery Macs will welcome their first users in mid-September. The new computer will stay busy with the expanding schedule of technology classes UNLV Continuing Education has put together.
Senior Program Coordinator Kyle Yahiro-Okino coordinates technology courses for UNLV Continuing Education and closely follows evolving trends in technology use and training. First on Yahiro-Okino’s technology trend watch list is social media, especially as it relates to business. A new fall course, “Getting Connected: Build and Manage your Brand Identity with Social Media,” will teach participants how to use social media to build awareness of their business, connect with potential customers, and drive sales. The next session begins September 15.
Demand for smart phone and tablet training is also on the rise, says Yahiro-Okino. More and more, these technologies are integral to the way we communicate and conduct business. People can come to Continuing Education to learn about iPad basics, or for more advanced training about leveraging tablet technology for their business. Continuing Education also offers technical training in developing graphics and content for mobile devices and the web.
The new Paradise PC lab will host Microsoft Office training, home computing, social media courses, and HTML classes this fall. The Mac lab will be utilized for Mac-specific classes, Adobe Creative Suite courses, and the Internet Design Certificate and Print Design Certificate programs.
View a full listing of fall Continuing Education technology courses online at continuingeducation.unlv.edu. Register online or by telephone at 702-895-3394. Customer service representatives are available Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday/Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. UNLV Paradise Campus is located at 851 E. Tropicana Avenue, just south of the main UNLV campus.

UNLV creates a ‘leader’ in online education

Published: Thu, 03/19/2020 - 17:35

What is the future of online education at UNLV? Recently, Vice Provost for Educational Outreach Peg Rees was quoted in a local news report as saying, “We’re trying to build a brand around the world to be the leader in online education. We want to be the gold standard in online education.”
Some might consider that to be an overly ambitious goal. However, the growth in online enrollment and the quality of instruction and curriculum provide supporting evidence for Rees’ statement. The Office of Online Education reports tremendous growth of 20,000+ increased enrollment -- a 255.4% increase over a nine-year period. In the 2002-2003 academic year, student enrollment in online courses totaled 9,437. That number grew to 33,539 in the 2010-2011 academic year.  Trend data indicate continued growth in the future.
“UNLV’s online courses are of the same quality as the face-to-face courses,” said Mark Fink, director of Online Education.  “There’s also a greater demand as students look for different ways to meet their learning needs.” Online education currently attracts students from all 50 states and more than 60 countries.

‘Never Stop Learning’: Continuing Education Builds a Brand

Published: Thu, 03/19/2020 - 17:35

UNLV Continuing Education has initiated a new advertising campaign to encourage its past loyal and future new students to “Never Stop Learning.” Created by B&P Advertising, the campaign and its new look began with a soft roll out in August with the Fall 2012 Continuing Education Catalog. In the months ahead, you will see and hear the “Never Stop Learning” message in print, online and on the air in such media as BLVD magazine, KNPR, Facebook, and digital outdoor billboards.
“Our goal is to increase awareness about what Continuing Education is and what we can do,” said Emmanuel “Meni” Sarris, director of Continuing Education. “We are flexible and always there to meet your educational needs and those of the community at large – whether you own a business and need to train your staff or if you and a group of friends want to take a class in something unique.”
Please let us know what you think about the campaign. Send your comments to continuing.education@unlv.edu.
