What is the future of online education at UNLV? Recently, Vice Provost for Educational Outreach Peg Rees was quoted in a local news report as saying, “We’re trying to build a brand around the world to be the leader in online education. We want to be the gold standard in online education.”
Some might consider that to be an overly ambitious goal. However, the growth in online enrollment and the quality of instruction and curriculum provide supporting evidence for Rees’ statement. The Office of Online Education reports tremendous growth of 20,000+ increased enrollment -- a 255.4% increase over a nine-year period. In the 2002-2003 academic year, student enrollment in online courses totaled 9,437. That number grew to 33,539 in the 2010-2011 academic year.  Trend data indicate continued growth in the future.
“UNLV’s online courses are of the same quality as the face-to-face courses,” said Mark Fink, director of Online Education.  “There’s also a greater demand as students look for different ways to meet their learning needs.” Online education currently attracts students from all 50 states and more than 60 countries.
