Certificate in Public Relations Skills

PURPOSE AND FOCUS
Learn from practicing PR pros and obtain a professional certificate to document your new skills and knowledge.  If you are seeking employment or advancement in employee communications, media relations, advertising, community relations or special events, you will learn valuable skills in this comprehensive program.  The curriculum has been assembled and reviewed by a committee of public relations professionals representing UNLV faculty and a cross section of Southern Nevada business and government agencies.

FACULTY
The practical, skills-oriented courses are taught by knowledgeable public relations practitioners, with both academic credentials and years of experience in their field.  Additionally, reliance on professionally accredited practitioners as instructors is emphasized using the resources of the local chapters of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) and Public Relations Society of America (PRSA).

CURRICULUM
To obtain the Certificate in Public Relations Skills you must complete six required courses and four elective courses from those listed below and prepare a portfolio demonstrating the public relations skills acquired from your course work and/or workplace.

Required Courses:

* Crisis Communications: Planning Your Work and Working Your Plan (This class replaces and combines the former Who’s In Charge Here? Crisis Communications and Handling the Media Interview classes.)
* Fundamentals of Public Relations
* Ethics in Public Relations
* Media Relations
* Public Relations Practice: Putting It All Together
* Writing for Public Relations (See note on Writing classes below)

Elective Courses:

* Info in Public Relations
* Pro Sports Public Relations and Marketing
* How to put the Right Words in your Boss’s Mouth
* Effective Newspaper and Magazine Advertising
* Golden Air: Broadcast Public Relations
* Surveys: Constructing, Conducting & Analyzing
* Special Events Planning
* Editing & Proofreading your Work
* Public Speaking
* Adobe Photoshop CS2 - Level I
* PowerPoint 2003
* Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 – Level I
* Digital Video with Adobe Pro Tools – Level I

NOTE: Continuing students in the Certificate must fulfill requirements listed in the current brochure when they enrolled in their first Certificate class

NOTE: Persons holding a minimum of an associate’s degree in the Communications disciplines of mass media, journalism, public relations or communications theory may apply to have the Writing for Public Relations requirement waived. A ‘writing for publication’ exercise will be assigned by the curriculum committee upon request.
