Explore the Amazon with UNLV
Educational Outreach

A Photographic and Natural History Adventure
Coming in Fall 2010

Join us on a trip to what biologists call the “green paradise" of the Amazon forest. Within this region, there exist exceptional national parks and reserves that contain the best wildlife viewing experiences in the Amazon.
The Field Museum in Chicago has documented that this pristine region of the Peruvian Amazon has the highest diversity of mammals and trees  in the world. The bird life is also outstanding, with 550 species recorded.

Tentative 7-10 day Itinerary includes:                          

  • Bird watching from dugout canoes.
  • Visit a manakin lek and pigmy marmoset habitat.
  • Swim with the pink river dolphins.
  • Use hydroponic technology to listen to the dolphins.
  • Nocturnal excursions to find potoos, nightjars, and owls.
  • Experience the forest canopy on the Amazon’s longest zipline.
  • Visit the poison dart frog conservation and study project.
  • Canoe into a blackwater lake to observe monkeys, nesting hoatzin birds, and horned screamers.
  • Trek to a lake with giant lily pads, tropical fish and electric eels.
  • Visit a native artisan market.
  • Motor up the Tahuayo River to see macaws, parrots, sloths, and monkeys.
  • Participate in the on-going primate research study at the Amazonia Research Center.
  • Learn how to improve your photographic and nature journaling skills.
  • Learn more about the ecology and natural history of the Amazon region.
  • Possible 3 day add-on trip to Machu Picchu.
